Scaling and root planing is one of the most common and effective treatments for fighting gum disease, and it may be the first treatment Dr. Elizabeth Kim recommends after you are diagnosed. Scaling and root planing is a type of deep cleaning and consists of two parts:
- Scaling, during which we remove plaque and tartar from your tooth surface
- Root Planing, during which we clean the roots of your teeth and smooth them to remove bacteria and prevent the bacteria from reattaching
The goal of scaling and root planing is to stop the progress of gum disease in your mouth so that the disease does not continue to spread and progress. It has been known to be highly effective in treating mild to moderate gum disease. Your treatment may be split into several appointments with a different section of your mouth receiving treatment at each session. Most scaling and roto-planing treatments can be completed without the use of anesthetic, though numbing options are available should you need or desire them.
Scaling and root planing may also be combined with other periodontal treatments in order to produce the best results. The most common treatment used in combination with scaling and root planing is antibiotic therapy.
